Softball Opens Home Slate With Pair of Wins

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The Oswego State softball team opened up its home slate with a pair of wins against SUNY Poly Wednesday afternoon. The team shutout the Wildcats 4-0 in the first contest before holding them off 7-5 in the day's second battle. With the wins, the Lakers improve to 6-4 on the year while SUNY Poly falls to 4-8.

GAME 1:
After two straight three and out innings for Oswego, the Laker bats started to come alive. Ashley Lyman led the inning off with a single through the left side and was immediately moved to second as Sarah McCullough sacrifice bunted in the next at bat. With a runner in scoring position, Erin Sweeney rocketed one to left field, scoring Lyman and giving the Lakers their first lead.

Every other Laker run came in the bottom of the sixth as Oswego added three for insurance. Sweeney led off with a single followed by a Tori Trovato bunt in which she reached first on. Gabriella Vertuccio moved the runners forward with a sacrifice bunt, setting the table for Alexis Nasca. Nasca took advantage of the opportunity, drilling one over the pitchers head and into centerfield, allowing both Sweeney and Trovato to cross the dish. Bailee Welker came into run for Nasca after the hit and later scored on a Melissa Mulvaney blooper into the right field.

Brittney Sears was in the zone on the rubber, striking out 14 batters and only allowing two hits. The transfer junior pitched a complete game, earning her second win of the year.

GAME 2:
Much like game 1, the Oswego bats didn't begin to show up until the third inning. The Lakers got on the board first, beginning with Trovato who singled and then stole second. Vertuccio was able to send her home from there as she hit a double that reached the fence. With Vertuccio on third due to a wild pitch. Mulvaney earned her second RBI of the day, sending her home with a single through the right side.

The Lakers capitalized on the momentum, scoring the remaining five runs the following inning. Trovato and Jacquie Porreca each hit for a single RBI, while Melanie Klauser, who came in to pinch hit for Claire Hewitt, singled in two runs. The Lakers other run of the inning came from a wild pitch that Nasca scored on.

Beginning in the pitcher's circle for Oswego this game was Nasca, who held the Wildcats hitless through five innings. She was then relieved by Alexandria Connelly who secured the Oswego win despite a small SUNY Poly comeback attempt.

Softball returns to action at 3 p.m. on Friday as the team opens up its SUNYAC play with a home doubleheader against Brockport.
