OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team opened up its SUNYAC play with two wins over Brockport Friday evening at Laker Softball field. Oswego downed the Golden Eagles 8-0 in the first game, before downing them once again 9-o6 in the second contest of the doubleheader. With the win, Oswego improves to 8-4 on the year and 2-0 in the conference. Brockport slides to 10-6 overall (0-2 SUNYAC).
GAME 1:It was all Oswego in game one, as the Lakers grounded the Golden Eagles in just five innings.
Alexis Nasca got the ball rolling in the third for Oswego, singling to the left side with the bases loaded, allowing
Melissa Mulvaney to score.
Jacquie Porreca singled in one more during the frame as she lined one down the right field line.
In the fourth inning, Mulvaney added to her impressive day which ended with her going 5-for-6 with seven RBI, recording her first career homer and increasing the Laker lead to 3-0. Oswego then took the bottom of the fifth inning to instill the mercy rule.
Tori Trovato led off with a walk, but was driven home on the next at bat as
Gabriella Vertuccio hit a double into left field that ricocheted off the top of the fence. Porreca then earned her second RBI of the day scoring
Bailee Welker who pinch ran for Vertuccio. Up 6-0, and with the bases loaded,
Claire Hewitt was hit by a pitch to send home a run. The final run came from Mulvaney who singled in
Ashley Lyman.
Brittney Sears got the win on the rubber, striking out seven and only allowing three hits through five innings.
Game 2:Much like the first contest, Oswego got on the board first in game two.
Erin Sweeney led off the first with a double and advanced to third on a pass ball. Trovato followed with a walk and while she was caught stealing, Sweeney was able to cross the dish.
In the second, the Lakers earned two more runs. Hewitt earned her second RBI of the day, ironically, by getting hit by a pitch again. Sweeney then sac flied to center to score Lyman from third.
The Lakers kept adding in the third as Mulvaney added to her RBI count with a single to center that scored two. Sweeney followed suit, singling to right to earn two RBI.
Brockport stormed back to make the game close, recording four runs in the sixth but another Mulvaney two-RBI single in the bottom of the frame kept the Golden Eagles at bay.
Sears opened up the game in the circle, pitching two scoreless innings before being relieved by Nasca. The senior would allow two earned runs through 3.2 innings and would be replaced by fellow classmate
Alexandria Connelly who pitched the final 1.1.
Softball returns to action at 12 p.m. on Saturday as the team continues its SUNYAC play with a home doubleheader against Geneseo.
