OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team suffered its first conference loss of the year 12-5 to Geneseo on Tuesday afternoon at Laker Turf Stadium. With the defeat, the Lakers drop to 5-2 on the year and 1-1 overall while the Knights improve to 8-3, 3-0.
Geneseo opened the game with a goal, but the Shattuck duo of
Erannan Shattuck and
Teresa Shattuck knotted the game up less than a minute later. It was E. Shattuck's 11th goal of the year as T. Shattuck picked up her 18th assist on a feed to her sister. The Knights then rallied for three-straight goals before
Esther Gabriel score the first of her team-high three goals. Gabriel was assisted by E. Shattuck on the play, making it a 4-2 Geneseo advantage. Oswego was not able to close the gap to less than two the rest of the way, however, as Geneseo built a lead to as many as seven in the second half.
Gabriel scored her final two goals in the second stanza, taking two free-position shots from the top of the 8-meter arc. The senior ripped both attempts from a sidearm position, tucking each just under the crossbar. Her two FPS goals sandwiched T. Shattuck's unassisted tally, dodging two defenders and beating the goalie on the doorstep of the crease.
On defense,
Danielle Walker led the squad with three caused turnovers while
Lindsey Eggers forced two. In total, the Lakers caused nine of Geneseo's 16 turnovers.
Goalie
Angela Ponto made eight saves between the pipes and added a team-high five ground balls. Helping in gather ground balls were
Emily Lange (3), Eggers (3), Walker (3),
Kelsey Henderson (2), Gabriel (2),
Briana Kimble (1) and
Gemma O'Kane (1). Gabriel finished with a team-high four draw controls.
Oswego will look to climb back into the win column when it travels to Fredonia for a 4 p.m. game on Thursday.
