OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team fell twice to Plattsburgh Saturday afternoon as the team celebrated Senior Day at Laker Softball Field. Oswego was narrowly edged 5-3 in game one of the doubleheader, before falling 13-7 in the late innings of game two. With the loss Oswego falls to 13-12 on the year and 6-8 in the SUNYAC. Plattsburgh improves to 20-12 overall and 8-4 in the conference.
GAME 1:
After allowing a single run to the Cardinals in the opening frame, the Lakers evened it back up in the bottom. With the bases loaded due to two walks and a single,
Melissa Mulvaney battled at the plate to earn a base-on-balls herself, knotting up the game at one a piece.
Scoring picked back up in the fifth inning as Plattsburgh doubled its run total with an RBI single. The Lakers would do one better in the bottom of the side though, plating two and claiming the lead. Porreca opened the side with a single into left field and was pinch then pinch ran by
Bailee Welker.
Alexis Nasca then got a hold of one, doubling into right center and putting runners on second and third. Mulvaney then hit a fly ball into center that allowed Welker to score. The Lakers earned their final run with the next at-bat as
Melanie Klauser singled into center and the ball was missed by the centerfielder. This allowed Nasca to take home and give Oswego the 3-2 lead.
The lead was unable to hold though as in the following inning Plattsburgh knocked in two, solidifying the 5-3 Cardinal win.
Brittney Sears pitched all seven innings for the Lakers, allowing 10 hits and racking up six strike outs.
GAME 2:
Unlike game one, it was Oswego that was able to get on the board first.
Erin Sweeney led the first inning off with a walk, followed by
Tori Trovato who attempted a sac bunt but ended up getting to first on a poor through by the third basemen.
Ashley Lyman used her sac bunt in the next at bat to advance both runners and the bases were then loaded as Nasca got to the bag on a walk.
Jacquie Porreca sent a single to centerfield on the next at bat, scoring Sweeney, but do to some confusion, Trovato was tagged out before reaching third. With two outs, Mulvaney cracked a double that went off the fence scoring two more and giving Oswego the 3-0 lead.
Plattsburgh would slowly creep back, earning five runs over the next four innings but Oswego was able to regain the lead in the bottom of the fifth. Once again, Sweeney got the side going, this time with a single into right field. Trovato followed hitting was appeared to be home run but was eventually called foul by the umpire. Able to regain her head after what she thought was a two-run shot, Trovato earned a walk to set the table for Lyman. The Lockport, N.Y. native made sure the ump had no questions about her bomb as she sent the ball rocketing over the left field fence, scoring three.
Tied at 6-6, the Lakers weren't done yet, claiming another run and taking the lead. Post Lyman home run, Nasca walked and was pinch ran for by
Katie Heselden. Heselden advanced to second on a sac bunt by Porreca and then took third on some smart base running when Mulvaney fouled out to the first basemen. Freshman
Claire Hewitt eventually knocked the junior in with a single through the left side.
The Cardinals would come back again though, scoring seven through the final two innings.
Three different pitchers were used in the contest beginning with Nasca who pitched 2.1 innings before getting relieved by
Alexandria Connelly. Connelly would be taken out in the top of the fifth, replaced by Sears, but would be put back in to end the game. In all, each pitcher hurled for 2.1 innings, collecting a combined three punch outs.
Softball will be back in action on Tuesday for an away doubleheader with Alfred University beginning at 3 p.m.
