ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team fell in both games of its doubleheader with Oneonta Saturday afternoon at Red Dragon Softball Field. With the loss, the Lakers conclude their season with a 7-11 record in the conference and 14-17 overall. Oneonta finishes its regular season 22-15 overall (11-6 SUNYAC).
GAME 1:
Oswego led off the scoring, tacking on a run in the top of the second inning.
Katie Heselden put down a two-out bunt down the third base line to get to first. She was then plated by
Melissa Mulvaney who doubled into left field, giving Oswego the early lead.
The team would then double up in the following frame, beginning with
Tori Trovato singling down the right field line. She was moved to second on a
Jacquie Porreca sacrifice bunt and was eventually brought home on an
Ashley Lyman double. The Lakers were held scoreless the rest of the game, while the Red Dragons were able to create some offense and score four of their own.
Brittney Sears pitched all but the final two outs for Oswego, striking out five in the process.
Alexis Nasca finished out the game for the Lakers.
Game 2:
Back-to-back doubles by Trovato and Porreca in the first gave Oswego another early lead in the second contest of the day. The Lakers built upon that lead, posting the rest of their runs in the second.
Gabriella Vertuccio led off with a single and was moved to third as
Sarah McCullough got to second on an error during the next at bat.
Melanie Klauser pinched hit next, singling through the right side and scoring the two on the diamond.
Heselden came back in to pinch run for Klauser and was moved to second on an
Erin Sweeney groundout. She then was sent home by Trovato who doubled into center. Porreca earned first on the next at-bat, securing the bag on a throwing error by the third base. With two on, Lyman knocked in the Lakers final two runs with a triple down the right field line.
Despite the 6-0 lead, Oneonta was able to slowly come back, tying it up at 6-6 by the seventh. The Red Dragons then won in the bottom of the final frame, in walk off, home run fashion.
