OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's basketball team fell 60-58 to the Oneonta Red Dragons on Friday evening. Oswego is now 3-8 overall and 1-4 in the conference, while Oneonta improves to 6-6 and 3-2.
This contest was a game of back-and-forth play as each team took the lead, but neither backed down. Oswego was able to get the game within one point in the final 10 seconds, where Oneonta went to the charity stripe after an intentional foul. After sinking 1-of-2 free throws,
Courtney Ameele threw up a half-court shot, which just missed wide of the rim after caroming off the glass.
Mary Mazzella turned in a fine performance, managing an 8-for-16 (50%) night from the field. Her 20 points is a season-high in 2016-17. The senior guard also recorded six rebounds, dished out three helpers and notched five pick pockets.
In the low-scoring contest,
Alison Nunziato and
Courtney Ameele also scored in double-digits. Nunziato tallied 12 points on 57% (4-for-7) shooting, including a 3-pointer to beat the buzzer at the end of the third quarter. Ameele hit a couple of shots from downtown as well and added four assists. Both players reeled in six boards on the evening.
Oswego returns to the hardwood on Saturday afternoon for another conference contest against the New Paltz Hawks. Tipoff is slated for 4 p.m.
