OSWEGO, N.Y. – The nationally-ranked Oswego State women's ice hockey team tied William Smith College 1-1 in overtime on Saturday afternoon in the Marano Campus Center Arena. With the tie, Oswego ends the regular season at 16-7-2 overall and 10-6-2 in the ECAC Women's West Conference while the Herons go to 7-12-6, 4-9-5. Oswego has earned the No. 5 seed in next week's ECAC West Championship and will travel to No. 4 Utica College at 7 p.m. on Thursday.
For the second-straight day, the Lakers owned an immense advantage in shots on-goal, outshooting the Herons 59-18. Oswego looked poised to rebound from Friday's loss with an early tally in the first period. Just 5:28 into the tilt, with William Smith serving a two-minute penalty for hooking,
Eryn Stewart found the back of the net to give Oswego a 1-0 edge.
Victoria Blake rocketed a shot from just inside the blue line that Stewart was able to redirect, catching the Heron goalie by surprise as the puck altered courses and slipped through the five-hole. That Laker goal was setup by a pass from
Alyssa Brockmann from the right wing to find Blake.
Oswego would have seven more extra-skater opportunities on the afternoon – including a 5-on-3 late in regulation – but William Smith's goalie saved several prime Laker opportunities right on the doorstep. The Laker penalty kill did their job in the contest, holding the Herons off the board during two power-play opportunities.
William Smith evened the game at exactly 18 minutes of the opening stanza. A Heron skater dodged behind the net and swung the puck in front but was stuffed by
Mariah Madrigal. Unfortunately, the puck squirted out to the far post for a waiting Heron rebounder for the equalizer. Neither team would find the back of the net for the remaining 47 minutes.
Madrigal finished the day with 17 saves in net.
Following the contest, Oswego honored its seven seniors for their contributions to the program over their careers: Brockmann,
Erika Truschke,
Brennan Butler,
Alexa Aramburu,
Kendall Appelbaum,
Alli Ullrich and
Ashley Lyman.
