Oswego Hands Cards Just Second Loss in Split

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team handed host Plattsburgh only its second conference loss in 10 games with a split against the Cardinals on Friday afternoon. Oswego never trailed in a 2-1 victory in game one before suffering an 11-0 mercy-rule shortened loss in game two. Oswego is now 7-13 on the year and 3-1 in the SUNYAC while Plattsburgh goes to 17-11, 8-2.

OSWEGO 2, PLATTSBURGH 1:

A Jessica Roe RBI single to left field with two outs in the first inning put the Lakers up 1-0 early. The run came about from a one-out Erin Sweeney walk followed by Rebecca Vilchez's single through the left side to push Sweeney into scoring position.

After a Plattsburgh run in the bottom of the third, Oswego scored the difference maker in the fifth frame. Vilchez led off with a double to bring Ashley Lyman to the plate. Lyman sacrifice bunted to move Vilchez over but a throwing error allowed Vilchez to come around for the eventual game-winning run.

Vilchez was crucial in both facets of the game, as the freshman moved to 4-4 on the year with a complete-game, five-hitter. She allowed just one run over the seven innings – which was unearned – while fanning five Cardinals.

At the plate, Joelle Nesci was a perfect 3-for-3 while Vilchez was 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double. Katie Heselden, Gabriella Vertuccio and Roe each finished with one hit.

PLATTSBURGH 11, OSWEGO 0 (5 Innings):

Plattsburgh tallied three runs in the first inning and then put the game out of reach with eight Cardinals crossing the plate in the third. Vilchez notched the only hit for the Lakers in the second game, while Heselden (2), Sweeney (1) and Melissa Mulvaney (1) worked one walk apiece. Heselden also swiped a bag once she earned the base on balls.

Roe took the loss on the rubber, surrendering seven hits and eight runs, six of which were earned. Korine Clark threw the final 3.1 for the Lakers, allowing three runs on three hits while striking out one.

Oswego returns to action at 10 a.m. on Saturday when it travels to Potsdam for another SUNYAC matchup.
