Holton, Cavanagh & Delli Earn Lakers Series Win

BROCKPORT, N.Y. – The No. 14 Oswego State baseball team defeated the Brockport Golden Eagles 9-1 on Saturday afternoon to earn the series victory and move to 19-7 on the year. Oswego also improves to 10-2 in conference play, while Brockport falls to 16-12 and 7-4.

Following a scoreless opening inning, Mike Dellicarri sparked the Laker offense when he sent a ball into orbit, crushing it well over the right-field fence to give the Lakers a 1-0 lead. The sophomore tallied an RBI-triple in his next at-bat and earned a walk.

Oswego blew open the game and effectively put it away in the top half of the third. Eli Holton had a career-day, as he hit a pair of homers, which is more than he had hit in his first two seasons. During his first plate appearance of the day, the junior outfielder crushed a shot down the left-field line. Alex Brown scored on the play, after he singled to center as the inning's lead-off batter.

As part of the team's barrage of hits in the third frame, Josh Hoagland, Zach Kollar and Kyle Dinges all singled. Hoagland brought Dellicarri home after he tripled earlier in the inning, while Dinges returned Hoagland to the bench via a run scored.

The Lakers added single tallies in the fourth and seventh to round up their nine runs scored. Oswego combined for 13 hits and did not make an error.

Mitchell Cavanagh set the standard for the Lakers, impressing once again. The junior tossed eight innings of one-run ball, surrendering just three hits and striking out six to lower his earned-run average to 1.79.

Matt Zakala closed out the game, pitching the ninth. He induced two groundouts, including a double-play ball for a scoreless and hitless final frame.

Oswego returns to action for a nonconference doubleheader against the Golden Knights of Clarkson University on Tuesday, beginning at 2 p.m. at Laker Baseball Field.
