OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team had its six-game winning streak snapped with a pair of 5-1 losses to Oneonta on Sunday afternoon at Laker Softball Field. Oswego falls to 13-15 on the year and 9-5 in conference play while Oneonta improves to 21-11, 9-7.
ONEONTA 5, OSWEGO 1:
Oneonta was able to break a 1-1 tie with a three-run sixth inning before adding another score in the final frame. The Lakers' lone run came in the third inning when
Erin Sweeney singled down the right field line to plate
Katie Heselden, knotting the tilt at 1-1.
Oswego totaled five hits in game one, paced by Sweeney's 2-for-4 performance.
Jessica Roe,
Rebecca Vilchez and
Sarah McCullough each tallied a single in the outing.
Vilchez and Roe combined on the rubber, with the former taking the loss in six innings of work. The freshman is now 8-5 on the year after allowing four runs – three of which were earned – against the Red Dragons. Roe threw the final inning, giving up a run and two hits.
ONEONTA 5, OSWEGO 1:
Oswego's only run came off the bat of
Melissa Mulvaney, singling to push
Gabriella Vertuccio home in the second inning. That made it a 2-1 Oneonta lead but the Red Dragons added two in the fourth and a solo homer in the sixth.
Again the Lakers tallied five hits, this time with McCullough leading the way with two base knocks. Mulvaney, Vertuccio and pinch-hitter
Allison Hallett had one single apiece to arrive and the five-hit team total.
Vilchez tossed a complete-game in the nightcap, scattering six hits to surrender five runs while striking out one.
Oswego will take a short break from SUNYAC action for a nonconference doubleheader at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday when it travels to Canton, N.Y. to face St. Lawrence University.
