CANTON, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team split a nonconference twin bill with the St. Lawrence Saints on Wednesday evening. Oswego moves to 14-16 overall, while the Saints are now 19-9.
Game One: Oswego 4, St. Lawrence 2
After going toe-to-toe through the first five innings, it was the Lakers that were able to capitalize late and earn the victory.
Rebecca Vilchez turned in a multifaceted performance, helping her own cause on the mound. The freshman opened the contest offensively, crushing a solo homer from the two-spot. From the bump, Vilchez tossed a complete game to get her ninth win of the season (9-6). She allowed just two earned and struck out six.
After St. Lawrence tied the contest at 1-1 in the bottom of the opening frame, the Lakers and Saints traded runs again in the fourth.
Gabriella Vertuccio singled through the left side to score
Ashley Lyman, who reached base on a walk and then stole second.
Oswego sent a pair of runners across the plate in the sixth to eventually claim the 4-2 victory. Lyman opened it up with a single to left, before she advanced on an error. In the following at-bat,
Jessica Roe singled up the middle to drive Lyman in.
Following a Vertuccio base knock,
Melissa Mulvaney tallied a single to left center, which drove Roe in to finalize the Lakers scoring.
Game Two: St. Lawrence 3, Oswego 2
St. Lawrence jumped out in front in this one after they were unable to manufacture runs late in game one. Subsequent to a 2-0 Saints lead through three innings, the Lakers rebounded in the fifth and sixth frames.
Erin Sweeney followed up a
Sarah McCullough single with a hit of her own, which drove in the sophomore base runner. McCullough allowed for the possible run with intelligent base running as she advanced to second on a wild pitch.
During the sixth frame, Roe also helped her cause with a single that eventually led to a run and took her off the hook for the loss.
Joelle Nesci came on as a pinch hitter and drove in Roe.
Roe tossed four innings of two run ball with three strikeouts and earned a no decision.
Korine Clark entered the contest in relief and threw 2.2 innings, taking the loss when the Saints slapped a walk-off double in the seventh.
Oswego returns to action at 3 p.m. on Friday as it heads on the road to face Geneseo in its penultimate conference matchup of the season.
