Lakers Claim Important SUNYAC Win On Senior Day

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's lacrosse team defeated the Oneonta Red Dragons, 9-7, on Saturday afternoon. Oswego is now 4-5 and 2-1 after the Senior Day victory, while Oneonta falls to 5-4 and 2-1 in league play.

Oswego was led by the 4-16 tandem of Montana Garrett and Teresa Shattuck during the contest, starting from the opening draw control.

Just over a minute in, Shattuck took control of the ball, set up the play and found Garrett for the first score of the game. The duo would pair up to score three more times, providing much of the Laker offense.

Shortly after the opening tally, senior Kendall Appelbaum picked up a loose ball and took it herself to the net, scoring her ninth goal of the year. After Oneonta got one back, Shattuck distributed the ball once again, this time to Gemma O'Kane to see the Lakers to a 3-1 advantage.

Oneonta did not disappear in the contest, fighting back to tie it at 3-3. Yet, Oswego thrived under the pressure and proceeded to score five unanswered. Garrett and Shattuck contributed three, while Toni Laneve – assisted by O'Kane – and Sami Duncan – assisted by Garrett – were credited with the other two scores.

Once again Oneonta fought back, scoring four of the game's last five goals. However, it was not enough, as the Lakers were able to fight off the ferocious charge. Laneve scored her second goal of the game with 6:41 remaining in regulation, providing a major insurance goal.

Angela Ponto nearly matched her career-high save total during her 60 minutes in goal, stopping 19 opposing shots. The junior recorded a .731 save percentage in the win.

Oswego returns to action on Tuesday at 4 p.m. for its second consecutive home contest when it hosts the Hawks of New Paltz in a SUNYAC matchup.
