Fast Start Propels Lakers Past Geneseo

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team remains undefeated on the season as Joe Sullivan (21), Liam Sanborn (13), Brandan Gartland (13) and Tyler Pierre (12) were among four Lakers that scored in double-figures as they held off Geneseo 68-58 in a conference matchup Friday night at Max Ziel Gymnasium.

 HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers came out of the gates hot as they opened up with an 18-2 run the first 6:15 of the contest.
  • Geneseo countered with a 6-0 run to force a Laker timeout with 11:13 left in the first half, sparked by the Knights guard Zack Panebianco, who finished with a game-high 31 points.
  • As both team's traded blows, a Pierre block led to a Liam Sanborn fast break layup that pushed the Oswego lead up to 31-14 with seven minutes remaining.
  • After Geneseo went on a 7-0 run of its own to the cut the deficit to 10, Gartland drilled a 3-pointer from the wing to swing momentum back toward the Lakers with 3:41 remaining in the first half.
  • Oswego held a 37-23 lead heading into the break with a 26-14 rebound advantage, including 10 offensive boards to Geneseo's zero.
  • The Green and Gold never surrendered their lead in the game, despite a late effort by Geneseo as they cut the deficit to as little as eight points in the final two minutes.
  • The Laker frontcourt, consisting of Pierre and Sullivan, were dominant once again as they each had a double-double for the second consecutive game. Sullivan produced his with a season-high 21 points and 10 rebounds while Pierre had 12 points and 10 rebounds, eight of those boards being offensive.  
  • The team dominance on the boards continued as the Lakers outrebounded the Knights 48-33 and 19-5 offensively that led to 13 second chance points.
  • The Lakers have won by double-digits for the fifth straight game and their 5-0 start is their best start since the 2015-2016 season.

The Lakers look to remain undefeated tomorrow as they host Brockport for a 4 p.m. conference matchup.
