Donnelly Dominates, Barnes Hits For Cycle in Split

AUBURNDALE, Fla. - Senior Robert Donnelly tossed a two-hit shutout and fellow senior John Barnes hit for the cycle as the Oswego State baseball team split a pair of conference games on Friday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park.  The Lakers dropped a 6-5 nine-inning decision in the opener and bounced back with 9-0 seven-inning victory in the nightcap.  Oswego moves to 6-5 while Fredonia goes to 10-3; both teams are now 1-1 in SUNYAC play after the opening of conference action.

In the first game, Oswego took an early 2-0 lead after Brandon Nicholson singled and advanced to second when Ryan Enos was hit by a pitch.  After a double steal, Nicholson scored when Mike Dellicarri reached on an error.   Enos came around shortly after on a wild pitch.  Two more Lakers were struck by pitches to load the bases with only one out, but the team could not capitalize.

The Blue Devils scored in both of their first two innings to grab a 3-2 lead.  That remained the score until the sixth when Eli Holton walked with one out and Barnes singled him into scoring position.  Lukas Olsson delivered a single to plate Holton and both Barnes and Olsson advanced on a wild pitch.  Zach Whelan reached on an error by the Fredonia shortstop to bring both runners home and put Oswego up 5-3.

Fredonia would score in the bottom half of the sixth to close back to one run, but the Oswego bullpen of Anthony Pacifico and Matt Bowman would hold the Blue Devils in check for the next few innings.  Bowman struck out the first two batters in the ninth before a pair of singles put the tying run in scoring position.  A sharply hit ball up the middle took a bad hop and allowed both the tying and winning runs to score.

In the second game, it was all Oswego as the team put up 18 hits in only seven innings of play.  Barnes went 4-for-4, Olsson and Enos both went 3-for-4, and Dellicarri, Whelan, and Josh Hoagland each had two hits apiece.  Both Barnes and Enos hit homeruns for the Lakers with Barnes' being a solo shot in the fifth and Enos connecting for a 2-run homer in the very next inning.  Enos is leading Oswego with a .472 batting average and six doubles on the season.

Donnelly was dominant in striking out seven on the day, including the side in the fourth after Fredonia had loaded the bases with no outs in the inning.  He moves his record out to 2-0 on the season and records his first complete game and shutout of the season.

The Lakers are back in action tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. as they take on Fredonia in conference play and then take the field again at 1:15 p.m. against Southern Maine to conclude their Florida trip.  Southern Maine comes into the contest ranked 15th in the country.
