Homers & Pettit Send Lakers Past Rams in NCAAs

WORCESTER, Mass. — The second-seeded Oswego State baseball team's freshman Ryan Enos impressed by going 4-for-5 with one home-run, three RBI and two runs scored in a 13-3 triumph over seventh-seeded Suffolk in the opening round of the NCAA Division III Baseball Championship at the Clark University Granger Athletic Complex.

Oswego (27-12) advances in the winner's bracket and will play third-seeded Keystone tomorrow at 8 p.m. at Whitehouse Field in Harwich, Mass. Suffolk (25-18) will try to stave off elimination against sixth-seeded Mitchell in a one o'clock matchup at Whitehouse Field.

The Lakers were also led by junior Mike Dellicarri and senior Myles Kutscher, who each blasted home runs. Dellicarri capped an eight-run, fifth-inning rally with a grand-slam while Kutscher connected on a solo shot in the sixth.

In the hitting department, the Lakers were paced by senior Kevin Hylas who went 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs as classmate Eli Holton also chipped in with two base-knocks and a pair of runs scored.

Oswego went up 2-0 in the bottom of the second when senior Zach Whelan and Enos had consecutive solo RBI base-knocks.

Suffolk responded by knotting the score in the top of the third on a sacrifice fly and an RBI single to center field.

The Lakers doubled up their opponents 4-2 and took the lead for good when Enos crushed a two-run homer into the trees beyond left field for his fourth of the year in the very next frame.

Senior Reston Pettit was solid on the mound for the Lakers, as he permitted just two earned runs on four hits over seven innings of work. Pettit (5-1) rung up seven on strikes. After allowing Suffolk tie up the score in the third, Pettit hurled four scoreless frames of work stranding five on base – including four in scoring position.

Matt Zakala and Brad Wroblewski threw an inning apiece, respectively, to close out the game for the Lakers.
