Volleyball Wins, Sullivan Breaks Blocking Record

Morrisville, N.Y. - The Oswego State Volleyball team finished competition at the Morrisville State Tournament with a pair of wins on Sunday.  The Lakers defeated Hartwick College by a score of 3-1 before earning a tough five-set victory over Penn State-Behrend.  With eleven blocks on the day, senior Alison Sullivan broke the career blocking record at Oswego.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego cruised over Hartwick behind a combined 20 kills from Sullivan (12) and junior Sarah Massie (8)
  • On defense, junior Shauna O'Flaherty had 21 digs while freshman libero Skylar Bechard had 20.
  • Captain Julia Flohr had a double-double with 19 assists and 14 digs on defense.
  • In the Penn-State Behrend match, Oswego was down 1-0 and 23-16 in the second set when junior Sarah Braddon went back to serve.  She reeled off the next nine points to stun the Lions.
  • In the fifth set, Oswego took an 8-5 advantage into the switch of sides.  Behrend would tie it at 11 before four errors in the last six points would seal the win for the Lakers.
  • The offense was led in kills by Sullivan (8), Braddon (8), Massie (7) and Melissa Lussier (7).
  • Senior Jessica Long led a quartet of Lakers with double-digit digs with 18.  Flohr, O'Flaherty and Alison Berger all had 10.
  • Sullivan had a team-high four blocks on a solo and three block assists to shatter the career record for total blocks at Oswego.  She now has 336 blocks over her four seasons of play, breaking the record of 329 held by Karin Flanagan since 2000.  Sullivan ranked sixth nationally last year in blocks per set at 1.20.
  • Braddon was named to the All-Tournament Team for her stellar play over the three-day event.

The Lakers return home to Ziel Gymnasium to face Cazenovia College at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.
