OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's soccer team began its SUNYAC slate on the right foot, downing Cortland at home on Saturday. A penalty-kick in the second half was enough to push the Lakers past the Red Dragons.

HOW IT HAPPENED
- At 72:44, Cortland was whistled for an infraction in the box, leading to the referee awarding a penalty kick.
- Mackenzie Schaffner seized the opportunity by tucking a low roller in the bottom right corner of the net, past the diving Red Dragon keeper.
- It was the sophomore's second goal of the season and third of her career.
- In the ensuing minutes, Oswego peppered the Cortland goalie with three more on-goal chances, but were unable to cash in an insurance goal.
- Despite holding just a one shot advantage over Cortland, Oswego had more grade-A attempts, owning the shots on-goal category 7-4.
- Emma Allen made four saves while blanking Cortland for her third shutout of the year.
- The junior now has six career shutouts.
- Lynsey Roth beat a defender in the 18th minute of play and unleashed a shot out of the goalie's diving reach, but the ball ricocheted off the crossbar and back into the field of play.
- The Laker defense swarmed Cortland in the final five minutes, denying the Red Dragons' effort to notch the equalizer.
