OSWEGO, N.Y. – The 13th PathFinder Bank/Oswego State Hockey Classic is set to commence on Friday, featuring the host Lakers, Salve Regina University, Concordia University Wisconsin and SUNY Canton. Oswego and Salve Regina are both ranked inside the top 10 of both national polls while Concordia and Canton ride in on wins over nationally-ranked opponents in their most recent contests.
Friday's night cap at 7 p.m. will feature No. 6/7 Oswego and No. 9/9 Salve Regina in what will be the two programs' second all-time meeting. The first came in January of 2014, when the Seahawks visited the Marano Campus Center Arena. Oswego came out victorious in that matchup, posting nine goals for a 9-3 win. The Lakers will look to move past the Seahawks as they try to earn an eighth PathFinder Bank championship win in just the 13th year of the nationally-known event.
Salve gained the national spotlight in 2017-18 by running through the postseason to the national championship game. The Seahawks forced overtime in the title tilt but fell 3-2 in extra time to St. Norbert University. Not only did Salve have a great postseason, but a banner overall season as well, going 22-6-2 to set a new program record for wins.
In the 4 p.m. opener on Friday, the Falcons of Concordia and the Kangaroos of Canton faceoff at 4 p.m. The Falcons defeated then-No. 13 Marian University in their last contest on Dec. 12. Concordia has faced three ranked teams during the season, two of which were ranked No. 1 at the time. In those tilts against ranked opponents, the Falcons are 1-2-0 with both losses coming by just a goal and one of those coming in overtime.
Canton enters the matchup fresh off a 6-4 upset over No. 3/3 Adrian College on the road on Sunday. It was the highest ranked team the Kangaroos had beat in program history and capped a successful month of December. In its four games during the month, the Kangaroos went 2-1-1 with both of their wins and the tie coming against nationally-ranked opposition.
