Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader with Canton

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team bounced back into the win column by sweeping a doubleheader against SUNY Canton on Sunday afternoon at Laker Baseball Field.

THE BASICS
  • Game 1 Result: Oswego 11, SUNY Canton 3
  • Game 2 Result: Oswego 1, SUNY Canton 0
  • Location:  Laker Baseball Field - Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: Oswego 15-8  | SUNY Canton 3-18

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Rocco Leone opened the bottom half of the first with a single to right field and, after maneuvering around the bases, came around to score off a wild pitch for the first run of the game.
  • Oswego tacked on three runs in the second inning, as six Lakers reached base in the inning, drawing walks and capitalizing on Canton miscues to lead 4-0.
  • With one out and one runner on, Lukas Olsson blasted a two-run home run to push the Laker lead to 6-0 in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Freshman Anthony Van Fossen was dominant on the bump in just his second collegiate start, not allowing a single hit through five innings while striking out five batters.
  • After Canton scored its first run, the Oswego offense answered with five in the bottom of the seventh inning. Myles Felton's pinch-hit sacrifice-fly put the Lakers ahead 7-1, followed by four more runs scored as a disciplined approach led to several walks with the bases-loaded.
  • Mike Di Salvo, Matt Zakala and Paul Christopher combined for the other four innings pitched to help put away the Kangaroos.
  • Brandon Nicholson went 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Olsson finished with three RBI.
Game 2
  • The only run scored for the game occurred in the first inning by Oswego. Ryan Enos reached after a hit-by-pitch, and advanced to third off a single from Mike Dellicarri. Olsson's RBI surge continued from Game 1 with a sacrifice-fly to score Enos.
  • The pitching staff for Oswego was remarkable, allowing no runs and just five Canton batters to reach base. Ben Wilcox started on the mound, tossing three solid innings and striking out three batters.
  • Nick Antonello came in for the Lakers in the fourth inning and put away three batters consecutively to leave a runner stranded at first following a leadoff single.
  • Dylan Wiley took over in the fifth and closed out the final three frames for Oswego, striking out three batters.
  • Enos, Justin Troelstra and Nick Chilson joined Dellicarri with a hit in the tilt, with Enos recording the only Laker extra-base hit, a double.
