CORTLAND, N.Y. – The fifth-seeded Oswego State softball team eliminated its second team of the SUNYAC Championship with an upset victory over third-seeded New Paltz on Friday. Oswego never trailed in the game, scoring three runs in the first and holding an advantage the rest of the way to advance to the third day of the tournament.
THE BASICS
- Result: No. 5 Oswego 6, No. 3 New Paltz 3
- Location: Dragon Field – Cortland, N.Y.
- Records: Oswego 19-20 | New Paltz 26-12
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Oswego used four hits and a sacrifice fly to produce three runs in the first frame. Erin Sweeney, Brianna Harrington, Jessica Roe and Madelana Wrubel each had singles with Roe and Wrubel recording an RBI apiece. Harrington was plated on a Taylor DuBois sacrifice fly to center field for the final Laker run of the first.
- The Lakers made it 4-0 in the second inning when a Harrington single scored Knowlden from second after the senior reached on a two-out single down the right-field line.
- Oswego did not score over the next four innings and the Hawks chipped away at their deficit, eventually cutting the margin to just one at 4-3.
- Harrington came through again in the seventh, this time blasting a line drive over the center-field fence for a full-count, two-run homer. Leah Czerwinski scored on the four-bagger after pinch-running for Angela Frampton. Frampton had reached base with a leadoff hit-by-pitch.
- Frampton went back out to the rubber for her third full inning of work in the bottom of seventh with a chance to complete the save. Sarah McCullough made a beautiful diving catch in center on shallow ball for the first out. Sweeney handled a one-hopper for the second out and Frampton struck the Hawks' final batter for her fourth save of the year and second in as many days.
- The senior only allowed one run on three hits in 3.1 innings of relief while fanning three New Paltz batters. Frampton's first strikeout came against her first batter with two outs in the fourth and two runners in scoring position. It was a seminal moment in the game as the tying run was at second base with the Lakers clinging to a 4-2 advantage.
- Harrington collected the win to improve to 8-2 on the year, tossing the first 3.2 innings of the tilt. The freshman allowed two runs on five hits while striking out a pair.
- At the plate, Harrington was 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored. Sweeney, Knowlden, Roe, Wrubel, DuBois, McCullough and Brianna LoMonaco each finished with a single to account for the Lakers' 10 hits.
