CORTLAND, N.Y. – The Oswego State baseball team carried out its business on Saturday afternoon, defeating Fredonia in its first game of the 2019 SUNYAC Championship. Solid pitching from
Kieran Finnegan and
Bobby Zywicki, coupled with three-straight scoring innings helped the Lakers beat the Blue Devils in a fourth-consecutive contest.
THE BASICS
- Result: Oswego 5, Fredonia 2
- Location: Bob Wallace Field – Cortland, N.Y.
- Records: Oswego 27-12 | Fredonia 12-22
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Fredonia claimed an early lead with a run in the top of the first and extended its advantage to 2-0 with a run in the fourth.
- Oswego erased the deficit in the bottom of the fifth frame when Lukas Olsson mashed a 395-foot double off the center-field fence to plate Mike Dellicarri and Rocco Leone. Leone led off the inning with a single through the left side and Dellicarri reached on a walk.
- The Lakers scored the eventual game-winner in the sixth when Paul Tammaro hit a two-out, sacrifice fly to left field to push the tagging Nick Chilson across. Chilson began the frame with a single through the middle, Ryan Weiss walked and Leone singled to second to load the bases for Tammaro.
- Oswego's third-straight inning with runs came from a pair in the seventh as Olsson worked a one-out walk before Brandon Nicholson crushed a triple to center field. A Chilson ground out to short plated Nicholson for a 5-2 Laker lead.
- Olsson, Nicholson and Leone all finished with two hits while Tammaro and Chilson had a single apiece.
- Finnegan earned the start and proved his worth with a 7.0 inning, one earned run allowed performance. The freshman picked off a runner, struck out two and scattered eight hits to improve to 3-2 on the year.
- In relief, Zywicki tossed a 2.0 inning save, his third of the season. The senior faced the minimum, allowing one hit but inducing a tailor-made, inning-ending 6-4-3 double play in the very next at bat.
