Simzer's First Career Goal Not Enough vs. SLU

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State field hockey team dropped its final tune-up before conference play begins against St. Lawrence University on Saturday afternoon at home. It was a statistically tight contest that the Saints were able to steal with two breakaway goals.

THE BASICS
  • Result: St. Lawrence 2, Oswego 1
  • Location: Laker Turf Stadium – Oswego, N.Y.
  • Records: St. Lawrence 3-4  |  Oswego 2-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Oswego started the tilt by applying a great deal of pressure early, owning the game's first three shots on-goal, all in the first three minutes.
  • The Lakers seemed posed to notch a goal but the Saints' Mckenzie Haberl was able to gain possession on the defensive end of the field and complete a transition goal at 3:33.
  • Oswego and St. Lawrence battled the rest of the half but neither team was able to score before the break.
  • The Lakers came out hot again in the third quarter, outshooting their opponent 10-2 over the 15 minutes.
  • Despite the shot advantage, Haberl was able to make it a 2-0 Saints lead at 35:52 with a similar goal to her first half tally.
  • Those 10 shots did not go to waste for Oswego, however, as Kacie Simzer cashed in a rebound off a Jessie Burggraf shot at 42:17.
  • Simzer corralled the ball close to the left post and pushed it over the line with the Saint goalie out of position to cut the Laker deficit in half. It was the freshman's first-collegiate goal.
  • Much like the second period, both teams went scoreless in the fourth to arrive at the 2-1 final.
  • Oswego had advantages in penalty corners (12-8) and shots (18-12).
  • Goalie Erica Scheblein made eight saves in the outing for an .800 save percentage.
WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers return to action with their SUNYAC opener at Morrisville State College for a 4 p.m. contest on Wednesday.
