Lakers Push No. 25 Brockport to the Brink

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State men's basketball team rallied from a 14-point first half deficit to push the matchup with No. 25 Brockport to overtime before the Golden Eagles were able to pull away in the 85-80 (OT) victory on Senior Day in the Max Ziel Gymnasium.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • Brockport held a 20-14 lead nine minutes into the contest.
  • Three minutes later, behind eight points from senior Joe Sullivan, the Lakers were even at 24.
  • The Golden Eagles then went on a 18-4 run to end the half with a 42-28 lead.
  • With Liam Sanborn, Sullivan and Sparks doing most of the damage, Oswego went on a 28-12 run to open the second half and grab a 56-54 lead with 10:37 to go.
  • Over the next seven minutes, the teams stayed close and the game was tied with 4:40 left at 66-66.
  • Brockport went on a 7-2 run to try and grab control with two minutes remaining in the contest.
  • Oswego answered with a 3-point play from Sanborn and a 3-pointer from Colby Moultrie to tie it up at 74-74 with just 13 seconds on the clock.
  • The Laker defense held in the final possession to send the game to overtime.
  • In the extra frame, the Golden Eagles scored the first six and the Lakers went 0-for-6 from distance as the visitors pulled it out.
  • Sanborn (23) led the Lakers in scoring with Sullivan (16), Sparks (14) and Gartland (14) also reaching double figures.
  • Sullivan led Oswego in rebounds with 10, but Brockport held a 46-33 edge in rebounding as a team.
  • Bench scoring was a key stat in the game with the Golden Eagles holding a 43-13 edge.
  • Prior to the contest, the Lakers honored seniors Tim Marshall, Sullivan and Gartland and then presented Gartland with a game ball in recognition of achieving 1,000 points in his college career.

The Lakers will host Cortland on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in the opening round of the SUNYAC Men's Basketball Championship Tournament.
