Lakers Force Overtime, but Fall to Cortland

CORTLAND, N.Y.Maggie Riordan scored the equalizer late in the game, but Cortland was able to score the game-winner in overtime to fend off a valiant road effort from the Lakers.

  • Final Score:  Cortland 2, Oswego 1 (OT)
  • Location:  T. Fred Holloway Field, Cortland, N.Y.
  • Records:  Cortland 7-4-2 (5-1-1 SUNYAC), Oswego 5-7 (2-5 SUNYAC)
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Lakers pressed action early with the first few shots of the game.
  • Cortland then got the better chances with a 12-2 edge in shots by the half.
  • With just over four minutes left in the first half, the Red Dragons swung one of their four first-half corners into the Laker box and deflected the pass into the net for the 1-0 lead.
  • Sophomore Haley Muehl had four saves for Oswego in the opening half.
  • The Oswego defense stood tall against a few corners in the second half and had a glorious chance with about 15 minutes remaining in the game.
  • Oswego broke down the right side and then sent a cross over the defense to a free runner heading to the back post, but could not connect on the strike.
  • A few minutes later, Cortland sent their own cross into the box where Muehl made a save.
  • The ball fell to a Red Dragon striker who slipped it past Muehl and was cleared off the line by the Laker defense.
  • As Cortland continued to press, the defense got a block on a shot, then began a 3-on-3 break.
  • Phyllis Reed drove down the middle then slipped a pass off to the left for Maggie Riordan
  • Riordan took a touch and lofted a shot over the keeper into the far corner with five minutes left in the game.
  • Reed nearly ended it with just under a minute left in regulation when she took a pass down the right side and swung a shot in that rebounded off the crossbar wide.
  • Cortland ended the contest just 26 seconds into the extra frame for the 2-1 victory.

The Lakers will travel to New Paltz on Friday for a 3 p.m. SUNYAC contest.
