Wrubel, Mennig Key Doubleheader Split

OSWEGO, N.Y.
– Behind four hits from junior Zoe Mennig and four RBI from senior Madelana Wrubel, the Oswego State softball rallied for a doubleheader split with Brockport on Saturday.  The Lakers fell 5-2 in the opener and won the second game, 9-3.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Brockport built up a 5-0 lead with runs in the third, fourth and fifth.
  • Oswego started to rally in the bottom of the fifth when senior Taylor DuBois kicked off the inning with a single.
  • Junior Brianna LoMonaco reach on an error as DuBois was thrown out at third trying to advance.
  • A single from Aleah Yaizzo and hit-by-pitch to Samantha Morgan would load the bases.
  • Sophomore Fiona Higgins would bring how the first Laker run on a sacrifice fly but a strikeout would end the threat.
  • Singles from Mennig and Wrubel would help plate another run in the bottom of the sixth to conclude the scoring.
  • Madison Hoeflich (1-2) took the loss while striking out three and giving up one earned run in 4.1 innings.
  • Higgins would strike out four in 2.2 innings of relief.
Game 2
  • Brockport looked to grab the early momentum in game two with a pair of runs in the opening frame.
  • Hoeflich and Higgins would connect for singles before doubles from Mennig and Wrubel would give the Lakers their first lead of the day.
  • Wrubel would score later in the inning on a wild pitch to put Oswego up 4-2.
  • A Walk from LoMonaco in the third and singles from Higgins and Mennig would extend the lead to 5-2.
  • Freshman Ellie Mahoney would start another four-run inning for the Lakers with a single in the bottom of the fourth.
  • Doubles from Wrubel and DuBois would plate runs for the Lakers to make it 9-2.
  • Sophomore Samantha Morgan (1-1) picked up her first collegiate win with five innings and only two earned runs allowed.
  • Higgins struck out two and allow zero hits in two innings of relief work.
WHAT'S NEXT
The softball team returns to action on Wednesday with a 3 p.m. doubleheader at Buffalo State.
