Lakers Come Back, Then Cruise Past Brockport

OSWEGO, N.Y.
– In what might ended up being the game of the year, the Oswego State baseball team won a roller coaster affair in game 1, one that featured multiple ties and lead changes before junior Kieran Finnegan shut down the Golden Eagles of Brockport in the nightcap.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The Lakers put two on the board in the first when Brendon Frank scored from second on a failed picked off attempt of Ryan Enos at first.
  • First baseman Ryan Weiss would single to drive Enos in.
  • In the second inning, shortstop Paul Tammaro walked, Frank singled, and Enos walked to load the bases.
  • Kyle Lauria would hit a sacrifice fly to score Tammaro and advance Frank.
  • Frank would score on a double steal when the throw went to second late on Enos' successful attempt.
  • Lauria would add a 2-RBI single in the fourth and the Lakers would plate a third run via error for a 7-2 lead through four innings.
  • Then things got interesting as Brockport used a pair of 3-run homeruns in the sixth inning to take an 8-7 lead and added another 2-run shot in the seventh to go up 10-7.
  • Enos and Lauria would reach base in the bottom of the seventh and Weiss would bring them around with a double.
  • Weiss would reach third on a groundout by Hunter Holliday and Connor Stanton would plate him when he reached on an error to tie the game at 10-10.
  • The Lakers would retake the lead in the eighth when Enos singled, Lauria walked and Weiss was hit by a pitch.
  • A wild pitch brought Enos home, and a Myles Felton walk reloaded the bases.
  • Holliday would beat out a double play and two runners would score when the ball got away from the first baseman for a 13-10 lead.
  • The Golden Eagles would use three straight singles in the top of the eighth to start a rally that re-tied the game at 13-13.
  • In the bottom half, Tammaro walked and moved to third on a wild pitch and Frank groundout.
  • After an Enos intentional walk, Lauria again delivered with a sacrifice fly to right that scored Tammaro and put Oswego back up 14-13.
  • Senior Ronald Loomis came on in the ninth and nailed down the save with a double play after Brockport had runners at the corners with just one out.
  • Connor VanDreason (1-0) earns the win with one and a third innings of work.
Game 2
  • Brockport struck first with a homer in the top of the first for the 1-0 lead off of Finnegan.
  • The junior then scattered three hits over the next five innings to pick up the win and improve to 3-0 on the season.
  • In the bottom of the second, Lauria walked and stole a pair of bases before Felton delivered a sacrifice fly to tie it up.
  • Oswego finally broke the game open in the bottom of the sixth when Frank doubled, Enos walked and Lauria tripled for a pair of RBI.
  • Weiss followed with a sacrifice for a 4-1 lead.
  • Felton followed with a single and a pair of steals as Jonathan Luppens walked.
  • Frank Levanti sacrifice bunted Felton home and Holliday tripled to plate Luppens.
  • Senior Jake Terrill came on in the seventh, allowed one hit before closing the game out.

Baseball hosts the University of Rochester in a doubleheader on Tuesday with a 1 p.m. start time.
