Laker Softball Drops a Pair to Buffalo State

OSWEGO, N.Y.
– Despite sweeping the Bengals in a pair of road contests a few weeks ago, the Oswego State softball was unable to hold off the Bengals in a 4-2, 11-3 doubleheader sweep at the Laker Softball Field on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • The Lakers took the early 1-0 lead on singles by Zoe Mennig, Ellie Mahoney and Samantha Morgan in the bottom of the second.
  • Oswego had two more runners in scoring position in the bottom of the third when Fiona Higgins singled and Mennig doubled, but Buffalo State escaped on a ground out.
  • Buffalo State plated a pair of runs in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth to take a 4-1 lead.
  • In the bottom of the seventh, senior Leah Czerwinski led off with a single and pinch hitter Tai Smith walked to bring the tying run to the plate.
  • Junior Aleah Yaizzo smacked a double to right center to score Czerwinski, but a flyout to center ended the contest.
  • Higgins (1-4) went the distance and struck out seven in the loss.
Game 2
  • Oswego found themselves down 7-0 after three innings when Smith and Madelana Wrubel reached on singles to start a rally.
  • Sophomore Madison Hoeflich doubled to bring in one run and first baseman Taylor DuBois singled for another pair.
  • The Bangals added four in the top of the fifth and then held off Oswego in the bottom half to complete to sweep.

Softball hosts New Paltz in a non-conference doubleheader at 3 p.m. Tuesday.
