Women's Basketball Earns 2-0 Start In OT

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women's Basketball team hosted the Keystone Giants this evening for day 1 of their annual Max Ziel Women's Basketball Tournament. The Lakers would win a tightly contested matchup that went into overtime. With this win the Lakers took the Team Game Record for total rebounds in a game that hadn't been beaten since 1983.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 86 (2-0), Keystone 84 (0-2)

Location: Max Ziel Gymnasium, Oswego, NY

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The first quarter proved to be a competitive matchup, as we saw 8 lead changes in the quarter. 

  • At the end of the quarter, the score would remain tied at 18. 

  • Oswego would go 3 of 8 on their 3pt attempts, and would go 3 of 7 at the free throw line. 

  • The Lakers would control the glass, out rebounding the Giants by a 19-11 margin. 

  • The second quarter would continue to be a chess match for both teams, as we saw 3 more lead changes occur in the quarter. Both teams would score 17 points in the quarter, resulting in a tie score at 35 going into halftime.

  • Despite the Laker's trouble offensively, they were able to keep the game close. Oswego went 6 for 21 in the second quarter, giving them a troubling 28.6% shooting percentage.

  • Oswego continued to control the glass, out rebounding the Giants 21 to 7 in the quarter. 

  • Shania Iglesias led the Lakers going into the half with 10 points. 

  • The contest would continue to be a close matchup through the third quarter. There were another 8 lead changes in the quarter.

  • Oswego would begin to pull away towards the end of the quarter, establishing a 62-58 lead going into the fourth quarter. 

  • The Lakers shot very well in the third, shooting 52%, making 13 out of 25 attempts. Oswego grabbed 19 rebounds, while Keystone managed to grab only 8.

  • The Giants would pull away from Oswego late in the fourth quarter, but Karleigh Leo would hit several clutch shots to keep the Lakers in the game; scoring 10 points in the final 4 minutes of play. 

  • Oswego would shoot 33.3% in the fourth, going 5 for 15 on their attempts. The Lakers would shoot 50% from the free throw line, hitting 3 of 6 attempts. 

  • The Lakers would have a chance to hit a buzzer beater with 2 seconds left in the game, but they were unsuccessful; the contest would be tied at 77 going into overtime. 

  • The Lakers would force 2 turnovers in overtime that helped them get past the Giants. 

  • Diamond Pickett would grab an offensive rebound with just over 2 seconds remaining in the contest and score on the putback attempt, leaving only 1.8 seconds for the Giants offensively. 

  • Keystone would miss their 3pt attempt from well beyond the arc, giving Oswego their second win of the season. 

  • Both Karleigh Leo and Diamond Pickett would record double-doubles on the evening. Leo would lead the team with 23 points, adding 12 rebounds, 1 steal, 1 block, and 6 assists. Pickett would have 14 points, 12 rebounds, and 2 assists.

The Lakers will face the SUNY Poly Wildcats at 4pm for the Max Ziel Tournament Championship.
