Baseball Splits With Top-Ranked Salisbury

SALISBURY, MD – The Oswego State Lakers Baseball team split a pair of contests in their first action of the season at nationally ranked Salisbury.  Graduate student Ryan Enos and senior Julian Drew led the Lakers on the day, each batting 4-for-6 while drawing two walks.

  • Location:  Sea Gull Baseball Field, Salisbury University, Salisbury Md.
  • Records:  Oswego 1-1, Salisbury 3-4
HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
  • Oswego opened the scoring in the opening frame, with Kyle Lauria stealing second and Enos scoring from third on the double steal.
  • Salisbury answered in the bottom of the first, scoring two unearned runs to take a 2-1 advantage.
  • In the second, the Sea Gulls added two more unearned runs to go up 4-1.
  • An Enos hit-by-pitch and two singles by Drew and Ryan Weiss in the top of the third cut the Salisbury lead, 4-2.
  • Oswego would claw for multiple opportunities, but 11 straight Sea Gull runs would prove to be too much to handle.
  • Kyle Lauria added a hit to the ledger and Enos scored both of the Laker runs in the game.
Game 2
  • Salisbury jumped out to a 2-0 lead after the first three innings, scoring one of the runs unassisted.
  • Drew led off the top of the fourth with a double down the left field line, and later scored on a wild pitch to trim the lead down to one.
  • Salisbury threatened in the bottom of the fifth, but freshman Colin Williams gunned down a player attempting to steal second.
  • In the top of the sixth, a Sea Gull throwing error and a Frank Levanti single would push across Weiss to tie the game at two.
  • Both teams had opportunities in the seventh and eighth innings, but the game would ultimately stay  knotted up, 2-2.
  • Enos tallied his fourth hit of the day with a single to kick off the top of the ninth inning for the Lakers.
  • A sacrifice bunt by Lauria, who then reached by an error, would put two men on base with no outs for Oswego.
  • Weiss would come up clutch, pushing across Enos with a base hit to the left side, giving the Lakers their first lead of the game, 3-2.
  • In the bottom of the ninth, Salisbury would threaten the lead with runners on second and third with one out, but Ben Wilcox would shut the door on a strikeout and a line out to end the game.
  • Anthony Van Fossen threw six dominant innings, striking out five and allowing one earned run in the no-decision to give Oswego their first win of the season.
  • The difference in game two proved to be strong Oswego pitching, holding the Sea Gulls to only two hits and 11 hits by the Laker offense.
