LEESBURG, Fla. - In windy and cold nighttime conditions, the Oswego State Softball team kicked off their 2022 campaign with an 8-0 loss to Ramapo College on Saturday. Their earlier contest against William Paterson was canceled on account of daytime showers in the Orlando area.
THE BASICS
- Final Score: Ramapo 8, Oswego 0 (5 innings)
- Location: Sleepy Hollow Fields, Leesburg, Fla.
- Records: Ramapo 1-0, Oswego 0-1
HOW IT HAPPENED
- Ramapo had the first big chance in the bottom of the first when they loaded the bases with two outs.
- Sophomore Fiona Higgins got a key strikeout to end the threat,
- Oswego put a runner in scoring position in the second when freshman Kylie Detz single and advanced on a Mattison Phinney groundout to second.
- A strikeout and groundout would stifle the Laker threat.
- In the third inning, Ramapo used a pair of singles and a double to plate the game's first run.
- Senior Brianna LoMonaco made a great diving catch on a liner to strand two Roadrunners on the bases to allow just the one run in the inning.
- The bottom of the fourth saw Ramapo score seven unearned runs in the tough, windy conditions.
- A leadoff single by Phinney and groundout by Taylor DuBois had the Lakers in position to extend the game.
- After a foul out, LoMonaco singled to make it first and third with two outs.
- Senior Aleah Yaizzo hammered a ball to the left-center gap, but the gusty winds held the ball up long enough to allow the catch to be made.
- Higgins (0-1) went four, striking out five while allowing just the one earned run.
