Softball Splits With Highlanders of Houghton

HOUGHTON, NY  – Junior Fiona Higgins continued her dominance on the mound in the first game of the double header against Houghton, only allowing one hit and passing the 100 strikeout threshold in her career. Oswego fell to Houghton in the second game of the double header 4-1, splitting the day. 

 

THE BASICS

Location:  Kerr-Pegula Field, Houghton, NY 

Records:  Oswego 2-7, Houghton 9-8

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1 

  • Higgins helped herself out of the first inning after the bases were loaded. 
  • Three HUGE strikeouts in a row kept the Highlanders off the board. 
  • Higgins went on to strike out the side in the second inning and also earned two strikeouts in the third inning. 
  • With the Lakers' ace doing her thing on the mound the Lakers offense struck gold in the top of the sixth inning. 
  • Zoe Mennig initiated the one out rally as she singled and advanced to second on an error. 
  • Higgins then helped herself on the offensive, reaching on an error to keep the inning going. 
  • Taylor Dubois hit a sacrifice fly into right field, scoring Mennig. 
  • The score would remain 1-0 in the Lakers' favor with Higgins striking out the final batter of the contest. 
  • Higgins finished the contest with 13 strikeouts, bringing her over the 100 strikeout mark in her career. 

Game 2 

  • The first inning started much like the first game, the pitchers retired ten out of the first twelve batters going into the bottom of the second inning. 
  • The highlanders added two runs in the second inning with a 2-RBI single. 
  • The score remained 2-0 until the top of the fifth inning. 
  • In the top of the fifth, Kylie Detz reached on an error followed by back-to-back singles by Samantha Morgan and Ellie Mahoney.
  • With runners loading the bases, Aleah Yaizzo singled to left field, scoring Detz. 
  • The Highlanders were able to get out of the bases-loaded jam with only one run scored. 
  • Houghton added two runs in the sixth inning, resulting in a 4-1 final. 
  • Maria Lutz in relief struck out four batters and only allowed one earned run in 18 batters faced. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will return to the Laker Softball Field for the first time on Thursday against the Tigers of RIT. This comes after rescheduling due to anticipated weather conditions on Wednesday afternoon and evening. The games are set to start at 3pm and 5pm.
