Lakers Split, Earn Victory in Walkoff Fashion

OSWEGO, NY  – The Oswego State Softball team split a non-conference doubleheader this afternoon against the Tigers of RIT. The first game was a seven inning thriller, concluding in a walkoff single by junior Tai Smith. Smith came in clutch for the Lakers in a pinch-hitting situation. The Lakers looked to make a late comeback in the second game as they did in the first but were shut down by the Tigers.

Final Scores:  Oswego 2, RIT 1 || RIT 4 , Oswego 2

Location:  Laker Softball Field, Oswego, NY 

Records:  Oswego 3-8, RIT 5-7

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1 

  • The Lakers got off to an early lead in the second inning as Taylor Dubois scored on an error from a ground ball by Kylie Detz

  • In the fifth inning the Tigers tied the game up at one. 

  • Tai Smith singled, scoring Dubois for her second run scored of the contest, walking it off. 

  • Dubois went 2-3 with her two runs scored as mentioned above. 

  • Fiona Higgins totaled 14 strikeouts in the contest, only allowing three hits. Higgins has held opponents to just four hits in her last 21.0 innings pitched. 

  • The Lakers' ace has 51 strikeouts in her last four contests. This is good enough to put her 38th in the country for strikeouts per seven innings with an average of 10.0 as of March 23rd. 

Game 2 

  • The first inning started the game off quickly, RIT scored first with a single to right center field. 

  • Zoe Mennig scored Aleah Yaizzo to tie the contest at one. 

  • Higgins singled to center field and advanced on an error by the center fielder, Mennig scored on the error, gathering their first lead of the contest. 

  • The second game of the doubleheader went scoreless until the fifth inning. RIT scored two runs off of extra base hits. 

  • They added their fourth run in the sixth inning, where the score lied for a final of 4-2. 

  • Yaizzo batted .500 in the game going 2-4 with a stolen base, a run and three assists. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will return to the Laker Softball Field for another non-conference doubleheader against the Cardinals of St. John Fisher. The contests are set for 12pm and 2pm.
