Softball's Offense and Pitching Shine Against Bears

OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State softball team faced off against Potsdam in a double header. The Lakers dominated in both of the games. The offense was on full display as they scored a combined 22 runs in the two games. Oswego won 13-3 in the first game and 9-4 in the second. Oswego picked up their seventh and eighth wins on the year.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Potsdam got off to an early two run lead in the first inning.
  • Oswego responded in the second inning with a barrage of seven runs and six hits.
  • In that inning Fiona Higgings hit a double to bring in Zoe Mennig for a run.
  • Madison Hoeflich hit a single to bring Higgins across home plate.
  • Tai Smith's double to left field brought in three more runs.
  • Mennig hit a single that brought Dubois and Smith across home plate, the Lakers took the 7-2 lead.
  • The Lakers continued their scoring outburst into the third inning, putting three more runs on the board.
  • Smith, Aleah Yaizzo, and Dubois each picked up a RBI in the inning.
  • Mattison Phinney, Samantha Morgan, Smith each scored a run.
  • Oswego struck again in the fourth inning after Smith hit a single down the right side and Maria Lutz scored as a result. 
  • After a wild pitch was thrown, Hoeflich ran in for another run, putting Oswego up 13-2.
  • Potsdam scored one run in the fifth inning.
  • This contest ends in five innings with the Oswego winning convincingly 13-3.

Game 2

  • Oswego broke the deadlock in the second inning after Phinney scored on a wild pitch.
  • In the fourth inning Potsdam got on the scoreboard after scoring two runs and taking a 2-1 lead.
  • The Lakers tied the game up in the bottom of the fourth after a wild pitch helped bring in Adriana Marini for a run.
  • In the fifth inning Dubois hit a double to center field to bring in Yaizzo and Smith for two more runs. 
  • Mennig singled to right field as Dubois advanced from third base to push their lead 5-2.
  • Phinney closed out the scoring for the fifth inning after she singled and helped Higgins and Mennig cross home plate; Lakers lead 7-2.
  • Potsdam hit a two run homer to decrease the deficit to three runs; Lakers lead 9-4.
  • In the bottom of the sixth inning Mennig hit a sacrifice fly ball to bring Yaizzo for the score.
  • Higgins singled down the left side giving her a RBI after Dubois crossed home plate; Lakers lead 9-4.
  • Oswego held on to their lead forcing Potsdam to a quick three and out to secure a 9-4 win in the seventh inning.

Final Stats

Smith earned three hits and 5 RBIs in the first game

Mennig went a combined 5-6 when batting and picked up four RBIs in the two games 

Higgins was dominant on the mound, collecting 14 strikeouts in the second game
