The Oswego State Men's Basketball team will host the final four of the SUNYAC tournament which features the #1 Oswego State Lakers, #2 Brockport Golden Eagles, #4 Cortland Red Dragons and the #5 New Paltz Hawks. The game will be a continuation of the gold rush theme, and will feature free gold pom-poms to the first 250 SUNY Oswego Students.
The Lakers will take on the #5 New Paltz Hawks in a SUNYAC Semi Finals matchup of last year. The Lakers come into the SUNYAC Championship with a record of 23-2 overall and a conference record of 17-1. The Lakers are currently riding a 19-game win streak and their last loss came at the hands of #2 seeded Brockport on December 2nd 2022. Since this loss, the Lakers have beat opponents by an average of 27.21 points per game. The Lakers' biggest margins of victory have come at 58 points against Buffalo State on January 6th and 59 points against the Hawks of New Paltz on February 3rd.
New Paltz is coming off of a victory over third seeded Oneonta by a score of 72-48 on Tuesday night on Oneonta's home turf. New Paltz outscored the Red Dragons 42-28 in the first half and didn't look back. Rylan Blondo led the Hawks as he has all year, scoring 23 points, collecting nine rebounds and went 8-13 from the field.
Oswego is coming off their final two regular season victories against Brockport and Fredonia. Again, the the 2 seeded Golden Eagles gave the top-seeded Lakers a tough time, only winning by a margin of six points. Oswego shot the ball much better than the first meeting between the two teams in the beginning of December. Where Oswego made a difference in this game was points off of turnovers and bench points. Brockport had 14 points off the bench while Oswego had 18 and Oswego had 13 points off the bench compared to Brockport's three. Brockport did dominate the paint, outscoring the Lakers 40-30 in that area. The Golden Eagles also took advantage of their transition offense, doubling the Lakers in fast break points 16-8. The difference in the game was the sharing of points on the Lakers squad, Devin Green finished the night leading the Lakers with 18 points. He was followed up by Cartier Bowman with 17, Jamal Achille had 13 and Ahkee Anderson had 11. The biggest thing coming out of this game was, the Lakers proved that when teams lock down Jeremiah Sparks, they still have players that can score. With four scorers in double figures this is a great time for the Lakers to continue sharing the wealth.
With their final regular season game, the Lakers finished the season with a 15 point victory over Fredonia. The Lakers did face some adversity in the contest, finding themselves down by 10 points with 12:18 to go in the first half. After Fredonia called a timeout, the Lakers caught fire, going on a seven point run to bring the contest within one. After a 13-2 run to end the half, Oswego went into the half with a four point lead (44-40). Oswego came out fast, going on a 7-0 run to start the half. Oswego found themselves up 49-40 in the first 40 seconds of the second half. From here the Lakers kept the points spread and the Blue Devils were not able to climb back. The Lakers continued their win streak which goes into SUNYAC play at 19 games.
Oswego is averaging 85.4 points per game, with a scoring margin of 22.6 points. Oswego's field goal percentage sits at 47.2% and they hold opponents to 39.4% accuracy. A huge contributing factor to the Lakers success this year is how well they have defended the three-point line as well as converting their attempts beyond the arc. Oswego has converted 40% of their three-pointers while holding opponents to 23.6%. The Green and Gold average 9.4 converted three pointers per game and hold opponents to only 5.5. Oswego averages 8.6 steals per game and has controlled ball-handling, only allowing 5 steals per game.
