Women's Lacrosse Falls Despite Great Comeback Effort

OSWEGO, N.Y.  –  The Oswego State Women's Lacrosse team opened up their season with a home matchup against the Clarkson University Golden Knights. The Lakers made a valiant effort in the fourth quarter but fell just short. Madison Davis scored five goals for Oswego this afternoon.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego State 11 (0-1, 0-0 SUNYAC), Clarkson 15 (1-0, 0-0 LL)

HOW IT HAPPENED

  • The Golden Knights jumped out to a two goal lead over the Lakers in the first quarter of play. 

  • Clarkson scored four more goals in the second quarter to give them a 6-0 lead before Katie Fierro scored the first goal for the Lakers with 40 seconds remaining in the quarter. Fierro was assisted by Shae McConnell, and the Lakers trailed by five going into the third quarter. 

  • Clarkson would go up nine to one before Sarah Kamide would return to goal for the Lakers. Clarkson scored again before Madison Davis was able to score off an assist from Isabella Lembo and cut the deficit to eight. 

  • Clarkson would score again before Davis scored her second goal of the afternoon. Davis was assisted by Katie Fierro, and the Lakers would trail by eight, with the score being 11-3. 

  • Madison Davis got the hat trick in the third period, with her third goal coming in with just four minutes remaining in the game. Isabella Lembo recorded her second assist of the evening with the goal by Davis. 

  • Just ten seconds later, Shae McConnell scored on a free position shot, and cut the Golden Knights lead to six. McConnell was unassisted on her goal. 

  • With two and a half minutes remaining, Madison Davis would score yet again, getting another assist from Katie Fierro. The Lakers would trail 11-6 at this point. 

  • With a minute and a half remaining in the third, Clarkson would score and give them a six goal lead going into the final quarter. 

  • The Golden Knights added another goal just 30 seconds into the final quarter, giving them a 12-6 lead over the Lakers. 

  • A minute later, the Knights would receive a yellow card, and Isabella Lembo would score for the Lakers while being a girl-up on the Knights. The Lakers trailed 13-7. 

  • Clarkson scored two more goals before Isabella Lembo scored her second goal of the afternoon. Lembo was assisted by Madison Davis, and the Lakers trailed 15-8.

  • The Lakers then scored two unanswered goals, one by Katie Fierro, assisted by Noelle Smith. Julia Quirk scored the other goal for the Lakers, unassisted. The Lakers trailed by five. 

  • With just under two minutes remaining, Madison Davis scored her FIFTH goal of the afternoon, getting the assist from Alexis Hill. Oswego trailed by four with a minute and 50 seconds left. 

  • The Lakers would drop their season opener by a score of 15-11. Sarah Kamide recorded four saves this afternoon, while Nicole Aherne recorded seven. 

WHAT'S NEXT

The women travel to Canton to take on the Kangaroos on Saturday, March 4th. The match is set to start at 1pm.
