KISSIMMEE, FL – The Oswego State Softball team opened up their Florida trip with a pair of wins this afternoon. The Lakers defeated Emmanuel College in game one, and then defeated New England College with a walk off base on balls by Krista Souders.

HOW IT HAPPENED
GAME 1

The pitching was on point for Oswego through the first five innings of play, with Fiona Higgins getting 11 strikeouts on the mound before Maria Lutz entered the game for Oswego.

In the top of the fifth, Mattison Phinney doubled to left center field. Adriana Marini was substituted in as the pinch runner for Phinney. Marini advanced to third off a sacrifice bunt by Chelsea Sellers, which set the Lakers up for their first run of the game.

Madison Hoeflich grounded out to second base, which was enough to get Marini across home plate, giving Oswego the 1-0 lead.

The Saints tied up the game in the bottom of the fifth inning.

Kylie Detz reached first base on a wild pitch in the top of the seventh. Mattison Phinney recorded the game winning home run to center field, giving Oswego the 3-1 lead over the Saints.

The Saints had a chance in the bottom of the seventh, but a pair of pop flys ended their hopes of making a comeback.

Madison Phinney went three for three at bat this afternoon, and recorded two RBIs in the contest.
GAME 2

The Lakers found themselves down early in the first inning, giving up four runs in the top of the first.

Christina Kania recorded a single during her first at-bat, then stole second base. Kania was able to get home when the Pilgrims committed a fielding error. Fiona Higgins reached first off of the error as well.

Oswego continued to crawl back from their deficit with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third inning. Kania scored again following a wild series of events by the Pilgrims. They recorded three back-to-back errors which allowed Kania to get to home plate.

Krista Souders recorded a single in the midst of the errors committed by the Pilgrims, and advanced to third base.

A single by Fiona Higgins brought Souders in, and cut the Lakers deficit to just one.

Mistakes continued to haunt the Pilgrims, as they put the Lakers in position to score off of a pair of wild pitches.

Souders was walked, then was able to advance to second on the first wild pitch. A single by Mattison Phinney advanced Souders to third base. The Pilgrims then had another wild pitch, which allowed Soudes to score, while allowing Phinney to advance to second.

The Pilgrims then committed an error, which allowed Phinney to score and take the 5-4 lead.

New England took back their lead in the top of the sixth, and led the Lakers 7-5.

Souders singled to center field in the bottom of the sixth, which brought in Ariana Guinassi, and the Lakers would trail by one again.

Oswego had bases loaded to start the bottom of the seventh inning following hits by Tai Smith, Ellie Mahoney, and Madison Hoeflich.

An error by the Pilgrims allowed Smith to make it home, and tie the game at seven with Oswego having bases loaded still.

Souders was then walked on the following at-bat, giving her the game-winning RBI. Oswego won by a score of 8-7.

Mattison Phinney once again led the Lakers in batting average, going three for four at the plate, with one run. Kania and Souders led with two runs each, with Souders adding two RBIs.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego State will have another double header on Monday, March 13th where they will take on Marywood University and Western New England University. Game one is set for 9am, with game two set for 2pm.
