PITTSFORD, NY – The Oswego State Baseball team defeated the St. John Fisher Cardinals by a score of 12-9. While the Cardinals made a run in the ninth inning, Richie Paul shut them down to seal the win.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Cardinals took the lead in the first inning, scoring a single run on a fielder's choice.

The Cardinal's starting pitcher struggled with control in the second inning, hitting Jelani Hamer and CJ McCarthy with a pitch before loading the bases by issuing a walk to Frank Levanti.

Shortly after, the Lakers tied the game at one when Brian Brezosky reached on an error. The next at-bat, Julian Drew was hit by a pitch, which forced in another run.

In the third inning, Owen Parliment doubled to right-center field, and was quickly driven in by a CJ McCarthy RBI single.

The Cardinals elected to make a pitching change after their starter walked another batter to place runners on first and second.

McCarthy attempted to steal third base, the catcher's throw was off-line, resulting in another Oswego run.

A few batters later, Tim Schinto reached on a fielder's choice, which pushed the lead to 5-1.

The Cardinals added three runs in the bottom of the inning to make it 5-4.

Despite the run-scoring success, the Laker's bats were relatively cold to start the game.

The game stayed at 5-4 until the sixth inning, when Parliment hit his second double of the game to bring in Drew. Hamer doubled a few pitches later to score Parliment and push the game to 7-4. The Cardinals answered with one run in the bottom of the sixth.

Drew scored on a wild pitch in the eighth inning, followed by a sac-bunt by McCarthy, which resulted in a throwing error from the pitcher, which made the lead 10-5. McCarthy scored on a passed ball a few pitches later.

Greg Carullo hit an RBI single that scored Levanti in the next at-bat, which brought the lead to 12-5.

In the bottom of the ninth with one out, Richie Paul entered the game with a 12-8 lead. The Cardinals had made a rally off of a few RBI doubles. Paul walked the first batter he faced to load the bases, bringing the tying run to the plate. He struck out the next batter he faced, bringing the Cardinals down to their final out.

Paul hit his next batter with a pitch, making the lead 12-9. This brought the winning run to the plate. Paul struck him out to close the game and got out of the bases loaded jam.

Pitching command and control issues plagued the Cardinals all game, piling up four wild pitches and five hit batters, compared to two hit batters from Oswego pitching.

Oswego State will come home, concluding the series against the Cardinals with a double header in Oswego on April 15, the first pitch of game one is set for noon.
