Softball Splits With Oneonta

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego State Softball team hosted the Oneonta Red Dragons this afternoon in a double header matchup. The Lakers split the series with Oneonta, taking game one, falling in game two. Fiona Higgins got the win in game one for Oswego on the mound, recording 11 strikeouts, and giving up just three hits.

Final Score: Oswego 5, Oneonta 1; Oswego 4, Oneonta 13

HOW IT HAPPENED

Game 1

  • Krista Souders got the Lakers on the board early in the bottom of the first, stealing home off an error by the Red Dragons. Fiona Higgins made her way to second base during the error by Oneonta. 

  • A single by Samantha Morgan set Ellie Mahoney up for a sacrifice fly to bring in Higgins and give the Lakers a two run lead in the first. 

  • Madison Hoeflich extended the lead to four with a single to right center field in the bottom of the second, driving in two runs. Scoring for the Lakers was Ariana Guinassi and Tai Smith

  • Oneonta would not score their first run until the top of the fifth, off an error by the Lakers. The Red Dragons still trailed by four with two innings remaining. 

  • The final run of the game was brought in by Guinassi in the bottom of the sixth inning. Guinassi singled to center field, bringing in Kylie Detz, making the score 5-1. 

  • The Red Dragons could not make a comeback with Higgins on the mound, and the Lakers held on for a four run win over Oneonta. 

  • Higgins was remarkable in game one, recording 11 strikeouts, while giving up three hits. 

  • Guinassi and Morgan led Oswego at the plate in game one, with both batters going two for two at bat.

Game 2

  • Oneonta got off to a fast start in game two, scoring a run in the top of the first to give them the early lead.

  • Oswego matched the Red Dragons in the bottom of the second inning, with Kayleigh Farro singling up the middle to bring in Ellie Mahoney for the score. 

  • The Red Dragons continued to put their foot on the petal in game two, adding three more runs in the top of the third, making the score 4-1. 

  • Despite this, the Lakers didn't back down, cutting the lead to just two with a run in the bottom of the fourth. Tai Smith drove in Christina Kania off a single to center field; Oswego trailed 4-2. 

  • Oneonta would not let the Lakers back into the game, adding two more runs to their lead in the top of the fifth inning. 

  • In the bottom of the fifth, Madison Hoeflich scored on a passed ball by Oneonta, making the score 7-3. 

  • Oneonta gave the Lakers hope, committing an error, allowing Souders to cross home plate and cut the lead to three. 

  • Oswego had no answers for the Red Dragons in the final inning, surrendering six runs in the top of the sixth inning.

  • The Lakers could not climb back from the deficit, and fell to the Red Dragons by a score of 13-4 in game two. 

  • Detz, Souders, and Smith led the Lakers in game two at the plate, each recording two hits. 

WHAT'S NEXT

Oswego State will remain at home and take on New Paltz in a double header tomorrow afternoon, on Saturday, April 15th. Game one is set for noon, with game two set for 2pm.
