PLATTSBURGH, NY – The Oswego State Softball team took a loss in game one to the Cardinals by a score of 3-2. This game went into extra innings, as the Cardinals took the game in nine innings. Game two was quite the opposite as the Cardinals came out with the 9-1 victory in five innings.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1

The first inning ended with three hits and three runners left on base for both team, the score remained 0-0 going into the second inning.

Oswego went one, two, three in the top of the second and Plattsburgh had multiple opportunities to plate a runner, but could not. Higgins struck the final two batters of the innings out, escaping the bases loaded jam.

The Cardinals put out the Lakers in one, two, three fashion once again in the top of the third inning.

Higgins struck out the first two batters of the innings before giving up a double. The Cardinals fouled out to the catcher for the final out of the inning. The score remained 0-0.

The fourth inning was a six at bat inning as both teams went one, two, three. The only person making contact in the inning was Samantha Morgan, who grounded out to the pitcher. Higgins added three more strikeouts in the bottom of the inning.

In the fifth, Oswego's offense continued to struggle, having their fourth three up, three down inning.

Oswego gave up one hit in the bottom of the sixth inning and held the Cardinals to no runs.

Ellie Mahoney singled to center field leading off for the Lakers in the top of the sixth inning.

Ariana Guinassi successfully moved Mahoney over to second base with the SAC bunt.

Madison Hoeflich hit into a line-out double play to end the sixth inning for the Lakers, Mahoney was out on the play with a throw from first to the shortstop.

The Green and Gold took down the Cardinals with three straight outs in the bottom of the sixth with two ground outs to the shortstop and one strikeout swinging.

Unfortunately the Lakers bottom of the seventh inning was more of the same on the offensive, going three up, three down for the fifth time in the game.

Higgins started off the inning strong in the bottom of the 7th, earning two straight outs on looking strikeouts.

From here the Cardinals earned a single through the left side and then the runner advanced to second on a wild pitch.

Then having runners on first and second after a walk, the Cardinals found themselves in another bases loaded situation after a single to the catcher.

Luckily for the Lakers, they were able to hunker down on defense and get out of the jam with a ground out to first base, ending the inning and stranding three runners on base for the Cardinals. This sent the game to extra innings.

In the top of the 8th inning, Oswego earned a runner off of an error by the second baseman and Morgan scored from second base.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, the Cardinals scored their runner from second base on a single, tying the contest at 1 after the eighth inning.

The Lakers were able to score Ellie Mahoney, who was placed on second base in the extra inning., giving them the 2-1 lead going into the bottom of the ninth inning.

The Cardinals earned two runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to take the 3-2 victory.
Game 2

Mattison Phinney was able to earn a single opposite field down the right field line but was unable to cross the plate.

The Lakers earned two quick outs in the bottom of the second inning, Plattsburgh earned two baserunners but they were left on, going into the second inning knotted at zero.

The second inning was one, two, three for both teams.

Oswego went three, up and three down again in the top of the third.

Plattsburgh broke through in the bottom of the third with two outs. Earning one run in the inning and leaving two runners stranded.

With two outs in the top of the fourth inning Samantha Morgan and Fiona Higgins both singled through the left side and Higgins scored Morgan with her single.

The game remained tied 1-1 going into the bottom of the fifth inning.

Plattsburgh's offense caught fire with a leadoff double, then immediately after, a triple.

The Cardinals scored eight runs on nine hits, one error and did leave two runners on base with their ninth run ending game two.
WHAT'S NEXT
Oswego State will stay in the North Country to take on Potsdam tomorrow in a doubleheader against the Bears.
