Lakers Take Down Oneonta In an Overtime Thriller

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Oswego Men's Lacrosse team traveled to SUNY Oneonta for their last regular game of the season. A nail biting second half saw Oswego score seven opposed to Oneonta's three. Hayden Coney tied up the game with only 27 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime. Each team had one shot on goal until a clear attempt sent the Lakers into Red Dragon territory where Max Brodmann scored the game winning goal.

THE BASICS

Final Score: Oswego 12  (10-5, 5-2 SUNYAC), Oneonta 11 (7-8, 3-4 SUNYAC)

Location: Red Dragon Field | SUNY Oneonta | Oneonta, N.Y.

HOW IT HAPPENED

After a good clear attempt by Oneonta, they scored back to back goals only 10 seconds apart giving them a leg up early on. Liam Sexton came from behind the net to make a quick pass to Hayden Coney who took a shot over the Red Dragon goalie, putting Oswego on the board. Later Connor Aspinall picked up a ground ball, handed off to Emmett Starowizc who whipped in a goal from outside the arc to tie up the game. The Red Dragons scored twice more in the matter of 40 seconds to set themselves apart from the Lakers. Oneonta scored on the left side with 1:32 left in the first quarter.

Asserting their dominance, the Red Dragons scored 40 seconds into the second quarter bringing the score to 6-2. Multiple turnovers by each team caused changes in possession over the next five minutes until Oneonta scored goal number seven. Aspinall answered back for Oswego with a bounce shot goal. He later added the fourth tally to the Lakers score of 7-4. With play in Laker territory, the Red Dragons took their time passing the ball around and scored with 1:03 left in the first half.

An Oneonta turnover gave Oswego possession and Aspinall rushed up the right side to score goal number five for the green and gold. Sexton scored with a shot over the top of the Oneonta goalie, edging the Lakers closer to a comeback at 8-6. Sexton then scored with a shot to the bottom of the net raising hopes for Oswego. Despite congestion in front of the net Oneonta scored, which was followed by a Corey O'Connor goal two minutes later, resulting in a tense 9-8 score at the end of the third.

Oswego won the opening draw control of the final quarter. Starowizc tied up the game at the 13:32 mark. Slipping one by the goalie, O'Connor scored to give Oswego the lead for the first time in the game, 10-9. Oneonta took a shot that ricocheted off of the goal, regained possession and scored to retie the game. After a clear attempt, the Red Dragons swung a low shot to regain the lead once more 11-10. Seamus Hand made a key save at the one minute mark, and now it was up to the Oswego offense to make magic happen. Coney did just that. He tied up the score with only 27 seconds left, and the game was headed into overtime.

Oswego had the first shot on goal at the 2:57 mark. Following an Oneonta clear attempt, Hand saved a too close for comfort Red Dragon shot. Oswego took the clear attempt and after some passes, Max Brodmann came from around the net with a low shot, to score the game winning goal!
