THE BASICS

Final Score:
Oswego State 2 (1-0-0, 0-0 SUNYAC),
Wilkes 1 (0-1-0, 0-0-0 Landmark Conference)
Location: Ralston Athletic Complex- Schmidt Stadium

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Lakers went into their first contest of the season and brought immediate energy and defensive tenacity. Less than a minute into the contest, the Lakers were able to start the season with a bang as Katie Delgrosso rocketed a shot to the lower right of the goalie that put the Lakers up 1-0. Early Shots by Brianna Winkler and Amber McDermott brought the pressure against Wilkes University. At 13 minutes in the first half, Katie Delgrosso took a shot off her right foot that missed just over the cross bar. At 29 minutes in the first half, the first significant pressure by Wilkes was applied to the Oswego defense, the Colonels Addi Parker took a hard shot that was wrapped up and saved by Oswego's goaltender Perri Anderson. Oswego held on to the lead for the remainder of the first half, 1-0 Lakers.

The Lakers started the first half with more of the same dominance that led them in the first half. At the 63rd minute of the game, Erika Yancey added an insurance goal that increased the Lakers lead to 2-0. Katie Delgrosso was credited with an assist. Wilkes responded with pressure of their own that would lead the Lakers Amber McDermott to draw a defensive foul that set up a free kick for the Colonels at the 72nd minute mark. That free kick would lead to a goal by Wilkes Madison Straub with an assist being credited to Sarah Eliff. The Lakers lead 2-1 with 28 minutes to go. The Lakers offense was not deterred as they continue the attack throughout the remainder of the game never allowing Wilkes to get an opportunity to equalize. The 2-1 lead held and the Lakers walked away with a victory in game 1 of the season.

WHAT'S NEXT

The Lakers will come home to the shores of Oswego next week, as they open up at home versus Geneseo on September 4th at 4:00pm.
