OSWEGO, NY– The SUNY Oswego women's volleyball team held their home opener on Wednesday when the SUNY Poly Wildcats came to town. The Lakers were looking to extend their two-game winning streak on their home floor. Despite some push back from the Wildcats, Oswego defended their home court and defeated SUNY Poly in three straight sets.
Final Score:
Oswego 3 (3-1, 0-0 SUNYAC)
SUNY Poly 0 (0-4, 0-0 Empire 8)
25-14, 25-20, 25-21
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first set, the two teams played themselves to a 5-5 tie before the Oswego offense came alive. After a kill by
Grace Gdovin, set up by
Harper Phinney,
CJ Eidem served 6 times in a row to help the Lakers build a 11-5 lead. A few points later, it was
Kalley Vugteveen's turn to serve, and she was integral in extending the lead over SUNY Poly to 18-10. SUNY Poly used both of their time outs to try and slow down the Lakers, but Oswego won the first set 25-14 on a kill from
Grace Gdovin set up by
Mya Bush.
Nyah Dias helped the Lakers take a small lead in the second set before Poly bounced back. Oswego took advantage of some errors on the side of the Wildcats to continue to build a small lead. Freshman
Maggie Crawford came in to serve for Oswego increasing their lead to 10-3 after a kill from
Cara Simplicio. The Wildcats did not go quietly, but the comeback was stopped by a service error and a booming kill from Vugteveen. However, as the set went on, the Wildcats hung around and closed the gap to just 2 at 22-20. After a late kill from
Gabriella Bishop, a SUNY Poly attack error handed the Lakers set number 2, 25-20.
With Oswego one set away from their first home victory of the season, SUNY Poly did not let them pull away by anymore than three points until
Gabriella Bishop sent home a kill to make the score 12-7 in favor of the Lakers. From there, the two teams would exchange points keeping the score close while the set wound down.
Kalley Vugteveen came up with a clutch kill from
Nyah Dias to make the score 22-17.
Nyah Dias' serving put Oswego on the brink of victory with two service aces and then
Gigi Basile delivered the final kill from Dias to take the third set, 25-21.
