HOW IT HAPPENED
Game 1
After holding Fredonia scoreless through two innings, the third inning unraveled for Oswego, as the Blue Devils erupted for seven runs on eight hits, including a three-run homer by catcher A. Hill. Oswego's starter Gabriella Milazzo was tagged with the loss after 2.1 innings of work before
Chelsea Sellars came in to relieve.
The Lakers' offense couldn't find an answer to Fredonia starter K. Phillips, who tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just five hits and striking out six. Outfielder
Kira Wright and second baseman
Lillian Haggerty each notched two hits for Oswego, with
Ellie Mahoney adding another in the fourth, but no runners advanced past second base.
Oswego's defense showed bright moments, including turning a double play in the fourth inning, but couldn't overcome a powerful and efficient Fredonia lineup that tacked on five more runs in the seventh.
Game 2
Behind a stellar complete-game performance from pitcher
Maria Lutz, the Oswego softball team bounced back in dominant fashion, blanking Fredonia 2–0 on Friday afternoon. The win moves the Lakers to 9–15 on the season and earns them a well-deserved split in the doubleheader.
Lutz was locked in from the first pitch, tossing a one-hit shutout with six strikeouts and no walks in seven efficient innings. She faced just 24 batters and kept the Fredonia lineup off balance all game, relying on strong infield play and timely pitch placement.
Oswego wasted no time getting on the board, striking in the bottom of the first.
Kira Wright led off with a single and later scored on a clutch RBI double by
Kylie Detz, giving the Lakers a 1–0 lead. Detz came through again in the sixth with another double, setting up
Ellie Mahoney, who grounded out to short but plated
Carolyn Sculco from third to double the lead.
Offensively, the Lakers made the most of their four hits, with Detz going 2-for-3 and collecting an RBI. Wright and DeGonza added the other two hits, while Sculco drew a walk and scored a run in the sixth.
WHAT'S NEXT
On Monday April 21st the Lakers will host the New Paltz Hawks for another SUNYAC double header.
