OSWEGO, N.Y. – The Oswego State women's ice hockey team opened the East West Classic with the tournament host on Sunday afternoon, but a narrow second-period swing proved to be the difference in a 3–2 non-conference loss to Norwich at Kreitzberg Arena.
THE BASICS
Final Score:
Oswego 2 (6-4-0, 2-1-0 SUNYAC)
#14 Norwich 3 (9-2-0, 6-0-0 LEC)
Location: Kreitzburg Arena I Northfield, Vermont
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Lakers controlled much of the opening play, pushing until the final seconds against a nationally competitive Cadets squad.
Oswego set the tone late in the first period when
Jenna Majewski snapped home a goal at the 17:39 mark. The goal, set up by
Elizabeth Cooley, rewarded a patient opening period and sent the Lakers into the intermission with a 1–0 lead.
Momentum swung early in the second as Norwich tied the game just over three minutes in, then grabbed its first lead at 7:16. Oswego answered back midway through the period, as
Liliana Ficaro finished a feed from
Leah Coley at 12:59 to knot the score at 2–2.
The turning point came with 1:40 remaining in the second period. Norwich's Maggie Hunter found space and capitalized, scoring what would stand as the game-winning goal and giving the Cadets a 3–2 edge heading into the final intermission.
From there, the third period unfolded as a grind. Oswego pressed for the equalizer, generating late pressure and earning multiple power-play chances, but could not beat Norwich goaltender. The Lakers even pulled the goalie in the final minutes, yet the tying goal remained elusive.
Oswego's penalty kill was sharp, holding Norwich scoreless on four power-play opportunities.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Lakers will be in action for day 2 of the East West Classic hosted by Norwich at 1:00 PM against conference rival Plattsburgh.
