How it Happened
Oswego immediately went on the offensive.
Kyla Sustad fired the first shot of the game against Canton in the fifth minute, and the Lakers would not have to wait long for their goal. In the same minute,
Sabrina Schmitt scored on assists from
Solange Catano-Matip and
Kaile Wilcher to make it 1-0. Sustad tried to score again in the tenth minute against Canton's goalie, Mackenzie Ryan, but she saved that shot. This marked the last opportunity for Canton to rest.
Kaylee Elliot put another goal for the Lakers in the 20th minute after receiving an assist from Sustad for a 2-0 score. Exactly a minute later, Schmitt scored for the second time in the game after receiving a pass from
Elizabeth Cingranelli for a 3-0 score. In the 26th minute, Cingranelli assisted again for
Solange Catano-Matip to make it 4-0. The only shot for Canton in the first half came in the 27th minute, when Kate Whitley's effort was saved by
Lucy Starzyk. Oswego continued to pressure the rest of the half, taking shots from
Luna Catano-Matip,
Ashley Praxl and Cingranelli, whose effort was saved by Ryan in the 41st minute.
Lamia Kosick took the Oswego goalkeeping duties late in the half, giving them a 4-0 lead at the half-time mark.
Oswego scored two more goals in the second half as well. They received an early corner, while the best chances for the Roo's came in the 55th and 58th minutes, Amanda Porter shooting out to the right and Nicole Morrow shooting out to the left. Those did not pose any danger for Oswego. Praxl scored the fifth goal of the game from an assist by Sustad in the 60th minute, with Ryan stopping Elliot in the 64th and 69th minutes to prevent the game from getting out of hand. In the endgame, the Lakers added yet another goal to their lead –
Madison Kelly, who had entered the game in the 71st minute, scoring in the 77th minute from assists by Praxl and
Emily Rath, giving Oswego a 6-0 lead. In less than a minute, Praxl managed to score her second goal of the day to end the scoring in the match at 7-0. Canton got a corner kick in the 86th minute, but the shutout remained intact.
