Colmar, P.A. -- Oswego Women's Ice Hockey returned to Hatfield Ice Arena this afternoon to face off against the Arcadia University Knights in the second contest of this weekend's non-conference series. After a huge overtime win last night, the Lakers were eager and wasted little time taking control, as sophomore Natalie Loncz scored just 0:58 seconds into the opening period before adding her second goal of the game early in the second to give the Lakers a 2-0 advantage. Strong play on both ends of the ice, highlighted by a flawless penalty-killing effort through several Arcadia power plays, allowed Oswego to maintain control throughout the contest. The Lakers continued to pressure the Knights offensively in the third period, with Liliana Ficaro capping off the afternoon with a late insurance tally to seal a 3-0 shutout victory and weekend sweep over the Arcadia University Knights. HOW IT HAPPENEDÂ
Building off last night's winning momentum, the Lakers wasted little time gaining a lead in today's contest with a goal scored by sophomore Natalie Loncz only 0:58 seconds into the first period. Keeping the Knights on their heels, Oswego controlled the pace of play for the opening minutes until they unfortunately suffered a too-many-players-on-the-ice bench minor, awarding Arcadia the first power play opportunity of the game at 4:49. Unphased, the Lakers did what they do best, penalty kill. Shutting down the Knights at both ends of the ice, Oswego returned to even strength unscathed. As the middle minutes unfolded, both teams traded turns on the powerplay, but the 1-0 scoreline remained unchanged heading into the second period.Â
Unsatisfied with Oswego's mere 1-0 lead, Loncz made quick work once again, scoring her second of the game just 1:23 into the 2nd period. Now up 2-0, the Lakers regained possession and continued to increase the intensity. This elevated level of play allowed Oswego to stay in control but with Arcadia trying to play catch up, the Knights and Lakers both would serve another penalty each before ahead of the third. Â
Like the other periods, the Lakers had good jump off the faceoff, but their enthusiasm would unfortunately land Liliana Ficaro in the penalty corner, forcing Oswego to refocus in their defensive end on the kill. Despite giving the Knights countless man-up advantages, the Lakers preserved their 2-0 lead throughout the 3rd period. As the clock began to wind down, Oswego did not let up, dumping shots on opposing netminder Gabby Meger and chasing rebounds. With just over 5 minutes to play, Liliana Ficaro redeemed her early cross-checking penalty with a third and final goal for the Lakers, securing their first weekend sweep of the season. Â
