Oswego, NY – In a tightly contested matchup at the Romney Tennis Courts, Oswego men's tennis came up just short on Wednesday afternoon, falling 4-3 to St. John Fisher in a match that wasn't decided until the final singles points were played.
Basics
Oswego: 3 (2-5, 2-3 Empire 8)
St John Fisher: 4 (8-3, 6-0 Empire 8)
How it Happened
The Lakers found themselves in an early hole after St. John Fisher swept all three doubles flights to claim the opening point. The duos of
Colin Byer and
Tyler Yhun,
Cole Lyons and Miguel Garcia, and
Cole Fleming with
Zach Triantafillou each battled, but the Cardinals controlled play throughout doubles to take a 1-0 lead.
Oswego responded with resilience in singles action, winning three of the six matches to keep the outcome in doubt until the end.
At No. 2 singles,
Colin Byer delivered a dominant performance, cruising to a straight-sets victory, 6-2, 6-3, to even the momentum.
Tyler Yhun followed with one of the most impressive wins of the day at No. 4 singles, grinding out a 7-6, 7-2 victory after a tightly contested opening set.
Duncan Baker added another point for the Lakers at No. 5 singles, earning a convincing 6-4, 6-2 win to put Oswego within striking distance of the overall match victory.
However, St. John Fisher secured the remaining singles points needed to clinch the match. Despite a strong start from Miguel Garcia at No. 3 singles—taking the first set—he was unable to hold off a comeback.
Cole Fleming also pushed his match to three sets at No. 6 singles but ultimately fell in a hard-fought battle.
