Juan Martinez, is entering his third year as the head cross country and track and field coach. Under his guidance, the men finished 7th and the women 6th at the 2023 SUNYAC XC Conference Championships.  Juniors Ellie Decker and Faith Coyle earned All-Conference by finishing among the top-15 in the conference for the women. 

On the track, Rhiannon Butchko placed 3rd, and earned All-Conference, in the high jump at the 2023 SUNYAC Track and Field Championships.  Coyle placed 5th & 8th in the 800 at the 2023 SUNYAC and 2023 AARTFC Regional championships while Decker’s 18:35 5,000 meters places her in the top 5 All-Time at Oswego. The Lakers have grown in size from 10 to 23 student athletes in the cross country teams and from 6 to 60 student-athletes for track and field.  Additionally, during the 2022-2023 Indoor Track Season, the men’s 4x400 was named 3rd Team All-SUNYAC Conference 

In the 2022 cross country season, Martinez was instrumental in putting together a new cross country course located in Fallbrook, Oswego, NY, which was the site of the 2022 SUNYAC Cross Country Championships. 

Martinez is an accomplished marathoner, having qualified for the Boston Marathon on 11 separate occasions, as well as competing in the Richmond and Toronto Marathons.  His last marathon at the age of 43 was the 2021 Philadelphia marathon where he finished in 2 hours & 45 minutes and placed 8th in his division and top 120 overall. He is a Navy veteran, having served the United States from 2000-2004, has a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Everest University 16’ and is a USATF Level 1 Certified Track & Field/Cross Country coach.
