Oswego, N.Y. – Alex Botten of the men’s hockey team has been named the Oswego State Male Athlete of the Week for the week ending March 9, 2014.
In an edge- of- your- seat game on Saturday in Geneseo, N.Y., the men’s hockey team became back to back SUNYAC Champions after defeating the Geneseo Knights 7-6.
Freshman Alex Botten was named the SUNYAC Championship’s Most Valuable Player after he registered five assists and a goal in the Championship game for the SUNYAC title.
Botten's late go-ahead goal at 9:30 in the third lifted the Lakers to a 6-5 lead. This was a game changer as the Lakers were up 5-1 and the Knights came back to tie it up 5-5 in the third. The Newmarket, Ontario, native worked impressively under pressure as he set up a perfect pass to Shawn Hulshof who scored with just 28.7 seconds remaining in regulation to take the title.
Oswego State earned a spot in the NCAA Division III Championship after winning SUNYACS. The Lakers will host Bowdoin College at 7pm on Wednesday in the Campus Center. This is first round of the NCAA Championships, the winner will advance to the quarter final game on Saturday.
