OSWEGO, N.Y – Sarah Grupp of the women’s soccer team has been named an Oswego State Athlete of the Week for the week ending Oct. 8. Grupp aided the Lakers to a 2-0 weekend the included a pair of comeback victories.
A senior, Grupp helps anchor a defense that allowed just one goal in each game. On Friday, against the Buffalo State Bengals, the Laker defense allowed just five shots with only two coming on-goal. That stingy defense held Buffalo State off the scoreboard for the final 77:56, allowing for the Oswego offense to score two, second-half goals for a 2-1 victory.
In Saturday’s Senior Day contest when Fredonia came to Laker Soccer Field, the center back added offense to her repertoire at a key moment of the action. Trailing 1-0 to the Blue Devils from the third minute, Grupp found the back of the net for the equalizer at 51:22 for her first goal of the 2017 campaign. It was the 12th goal of her career and forced two overtime periods. Early in the second overtime, classmate Emma Geyer was able to score her third goal of the year and capture another 2-1 triumph for Oswego.
Grupp and the defense again stymied an offense for a good chunk of game time, holding Fredonia scoreless for the final 87:20 of regulation and an additional 11:36 of overtime.
Oswego will return to the pitch at 3 p.m. on Friday as it travels to Brockport for conference competition with the Golden Eagles.
